How is Battlefield 4 nowadays?

As you guys probably know, BF4 is on sale for $7.99USD and Premium Edition for $23.99USD on the PlayStation Store, and I was thinking about buying it but I have some quick questions first:

  1. How is the community currently? Do a lot of people still play? Are there new players or is everyone pretty much a veteran?
  2. Are the vanilla maps still popular? Is the game even worth it without getting Premium?
