Uncharted 1 felt like an outdated cover shooter that just keeps throwing enemies at you. Uncharted 2 was a bit better, but those boss fights just made the game unbearable for me. Although I owned the whole collection, I never even bothered with the third part. Bash me all you want, I know that's retarded of me.
After initially denouncing the Uncharted series, I did decide to pick up Uncharted 4 recently though.
First off, I love that you can play this game without having played the previous parts. It pretty much has a conclusive story, even including flashbacks to Drake's childhood so you understand the bond between him and Sam.
Naughty Dog has definitely learned a lot over the years both in terms of gameplay, story and characters.
The game has a perfect balance between dialogue, climbing and combat. Just when you think you've had enough of story sequences and climbing around, the game throws you into a fight. This is something that I felt was greatly improved in comparison to the earlier games.
The semi-open levels are fantastic. Not only do you have various routes to choose from, but even when climbing, there are several ways to climb a building. And you can choose yourself. Also being able to drive around in the car and having to solve environmental puzzles was integrated very well.
Graphics wise, the game is unbelievable. There is not much to say or argue about here. It looks incredible, nearly photorealistic at times.
The character relations were well structured. You could associate with Sam, Rafe and Elena just through the playbable sequences in the game. The acting was also incredible, definitely Hollywood-level.
This game blew away all the previous conceptions I had of the Uncharted series. Especially the ending left me with a deep impression and a feeling of both emptiness and satisfaction.
I know there are hundreds of UC4 appreciation threads on this sub, but I just wanted to say this. Anyone who hasn't played this yet should consider picking this up.
