Is anyone else getting smiley faces in private messages from random people?

The last few days I've gotten four messages with nothing but ":-)" in the text body from four different users on PSN. I don't have PS+ and don't ever go online. I'm strictly single-player. I haven't responded to any but I did open one of them today, that's when I got the other three. I don't understand what this is.
