Upgrading PS4 Hard Drive without External Drive

Hi there,

Hopefully a quick question. I have a 500gb PS4, and a spare 1tb hard drive. Everything I have read says I need to copy my data to an external drive, swap the HD, then copy it back. Could I instead just mount the 1tb in an enclosure, copy the ps4 contents, then swap the drives?
