The Xbox One:
Currently I'm sporting an Original Xbox One in a limited edition white colour. But over the last few months my opinions of the system have gone from a solid:
"Yea this is a great console I've had no issues with it and I've enjoyed playing games on it"
To a resounding:
"God why is the dashboard so fucking slow, oh look the OneX is coming wonder if that'll mean new games for once, GREATTTT another sequel to something I don't care about, GREATTTT another remake to something I brought literally 3 years ago. Why won't my game load... time for a reinstall I guess. Yep same games on G4G as usual"
Needless to say it's kinda got the gamer side of me down. I'll be honest, the original reasons for me choosing the Xbox One over the PS4 were kinda simple:
- I had the Xbox 360 previously
- I liked the One controller more than the PS4
- Got a limited edition white Xbox One for £50 cheaper than a PS4 was at the time.
- A friend of mine had the Xbox One (He's sadly now passed away)
- Backwards compatibility was just announced.
- Halo 5 (turned out to be a solid Meh)
- Deadrising 4 (Turned out to be a resounding Meh)
But Then...
Well those have now changed I guess. I don't use Backwards Compatibility as much as I thought I would (Maybe for 5 games and now I've completed them it's no longer used much). The PS4 controller has grown on me, though admittedly I still prefer the Xbox One controller. Halo has gone in a direction that frankly doesn't engage me anymore (I still love Reach and the older games but Halo 5 just wasn't memorable at all to me. They also shat on fans with MCC which is unforgivable) And as stated above the friend who had the Xbone passed away about 1 year after me getting the system.
An Important Thought:
And thus the great question arouse in my mind... What if I were a PS4 user.
I did some research and it became apparent to me why the PS4 has sold so much better than the Xbox One... Blindingly so.
As far as I could find the dashboard issues I'd come to despise on the Xbox One weren't remotely happening on the PS4 (and clutter was kept to a minimum). Sony seems to be consistently delivering on their exclusives, exclusives that aren't just remakes of 3 year old games but are diverse titles, including brand new IP.
- Until Dawn looks fantastic
- Crash Collection takes me back to my PS1/2 days, really looks like they cared about their remake of them Cough MCC is shite
- They have Kojima onboard which is awesome
- Horizon Zero Dawn was a new IP selling insanely well competing with BoTW
- Last of Us seems to get talked about a lot, also a sequel is in the works
- Spiderman So far it looks promising and if I'm honest in a game like that I just wanna be a superhero for a bit
- Last Guardian I mean it's Shadow of the Colossus makers newest game how could I say no.
- Persona 5 Because my more anime minded friend says I should
- No Mans Sky Because I think it's..... HAHAHAHAH Okay not this one at all. Fuck that game.
On top of which PS4 is getting all the cross-platform stuff (DOOM, Wolfenstien, Lego Star Wars, GTA V, Batman, Fallout 4, Battlefront) which is mainly what I've been getting for Xbox anyway because their first party support has been mediocre at best.
On top of this all the friends I'm closer to now are on PS4 so I'm the lone Xbox player.
My Position:
Luckily for me I've not really invested heavily into the Xbox. I don't have Kinect (Because let's be fair it's only real use is experiments rather than gaming), I only have the 1 controller my system came with and I've never invested in crappy gaming headphones. So what I have is the Xbox One (500GB) white model, about 14 physical games and 3 digital games. So not a Millionaires collection. In fact just getting the PS4 exclusive titles in addition to what I have would almost double my collection.
The issue then lies with cost. I'm a student at the end of university life, in a mere month I'll be out of uni and looking for work (And living with parents while doing so). While there is no issues in me having consoles I already have (Wii U, Switch, 3DS, Xbox, Vita) buying a new one in addition to what I have isn't really an option.
The only way for me to switch to PS4 is to say bye to the Xbox One, doing so in a cost effective manner. Ideally after selling my Xbox One and games I only want to have to spent an additional £20-40 on the upgrade (in addition to using all the money from my Xbox sales to fund the PS4). Luckily rebuying the games I have shouldn't be a horrific experience because they are so cheap now it'll almost be a 1-1 exchange from the Xbone version to the PS4 one (if not cheaper depending on availability and luck) The main price issue comes with the console. Selling an Original (Limited edition) Xbox to get a pre-owned PS4 (either Original or Slim because the Pro is flat out pointless for me).
Questions:
- Has anyone here made the Xbox One to PS4 switch?
- If so how have you found doing it?
- What are some good tips for doing this at the best price?
- What games should I look out for?
- What should I know about the PS4 if I do this?
- Original PS4 vs PS4 Slim... Realistically, What's the difference?
- Do PS4's allow for use of external HDDs?
- Hows the PS4's online and free game selection?
- What's the OS experience like?
- What are some PS4 negatives?
Any other information would be great!
