Horizon: Zero Dawn & Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Horizon: Zero Dawn & Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice are two of my favorite games of the year. Horizon Zero Dawn is an open world game with a great premise and juxtaposed setting that breathes new life into the post apocalypse genre while Hellblade is a short and relatively linear narrative driven experience.

Both are amazing games for different reasons and feature strong female protagonists. Aloy and Senua are strong, skilled warriors, but are portrayed very differently. Aloy is intelligent, headstrong and confident in herself whereas Senua demonstrates strength in her refusal to succumb to her inner struggles. Neither game ever uses their femininity as crutch to fall back on gender tropes that were once prominent in the industry and I'm glad we're getting past those days.

Visually, my favorite aspect of both of these characters designs are their long dreadlocks, which is weird for me to say as hair isn't something I usually pay attention to (I am male), but for some reason it stood out to me with these characters.
