What happened to quirky racers of the early days? (Ie. Jet Motto, SSX, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Test Drive, Twisted Metal)

Seems like the "quirky" racer category which was prevelant on Ps1 & Ps2 is almost entirely gone from the modern era.

• Wipeout (I know this got a remaster but not a new one)
