Can my ps4 read an external hard drive for media.

I have a 1st gen PS4, brought close to release date. The media player can read a 64gb USB stick and play .MP4 files.

If I buy a 1tb hard drive will it be able to do the same thing? Ive read mixed reviews and some saying that it will only read USB sticks of a certain size and I cant read from an external HDD with the 1st gen.
