Hi all,
My SO and I are looking into getting a console, mainly for co-op play. We are looking to make our decision on what console mainly based on how many games of the ‘style’ we like we can find for a particular console, so I’m asking on all the console subs for game recommendations that might fit what we are after.
The style we are after as very reminiscent of old console games I played as a kid, but have become difficult to find (at least on PC) these days. I don’t know if that is the case for consoles or not.
So the best way to describe what we are looking for is first/third person action RPG. For those who know the game, LOTR War in the North epitomises exactly what we want – hack & slash combat with light RPG elements, Skills to choose from and upgrade, weapons, and a story. So we are looking for games that fill the following conditions
- PvE co-op. We will probably end up getting SP games for whatever console we get, but they are not a factor in our decision making. Furthermore, we are uninterested in PvP or any game that is huge party-vs-environment/MMO. We basically want to sit on the sofa and play something, with no one else. NPC followers/party members (like in L4D) are fine, we just don’t want to be forced to have to join other groups. Probably requires splitscreen since we don't want to buy two consoles/TVs.
- Narrative based. Now the narrative doesn’t have to be super good, but it needs to be there. We don’t mind if they are linear levels or open world, though.
- First, or Third, person. No isometric, no top-down. Again, using war in the north as an example
- real-time combat. This is a soft criterion and we would be willing to consider games that break it, but we are pretty much looking for hack & slash gameplay where we can chop up a bunch of enemies together, with strategic flavor added in with skills. To be clear, we both do like turn-based games, but we have plenty of options for those. Right now, we are looking for something else. Feel free to suggest them anyway, just not that is what they are.
- Not a Lego game.
The setting doesn’t really matter. It can be Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars, or an original fantasy or Sci-fi IP. Neither of us is really big on horror but willing to entertain them. Modern-day shooters are not really a thing we are interested in, but fantasy or sci-fi probably would be.
Other games I can think of that are similar to what I’m on about are, interestingly, also lord of the rings games. The old Two Towers and Return of the King games are great examples. The original Halo and L4D are also good examples, but we know of those .Some other examples I can think of that match the style of game we are after but don’t have co-op are: Dark Souls, Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen, and The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect.
So, we are probably going to end up buying the console that has the most games that match what we are after, and once we have that then branch out to see what other SP games we can get for ourselves. At the moment, Co-op titles are our primary concern.
So, what does the PS4 have to offer?
