Ps4 slim headsets, with no optical port should I give up on surround sound?

Scooping up a slim soon and was surprised to see they have removed the optical. Is it more trouble than it's worth to purchase additional adapters to keep up with surround sound? Should I just go stereo?

I prefer usb over 3.5mm to controller, I own some Cloud II's but have read about compatibility issues regarding their virtual 7.1 and volume issues in general.
