Recently posted my impressions following completion of Route A and a few hours of Route B:
Stubborm determination to not waste my money got me to carry on my playthrough and, to be honest, I was very happy with my decision after finishing Route B. The story opens up, there is much more intrigue introduced to the world and I actually rushed headlong into Route C.
REMEMBER MY SPOILER WARNING
I felt that the continuation of the war against the machines was a good direction to go with the story and returned to Earth to kick some arse. The defeat of YoRHa early on, with the loss of the bunker and death of 2B, was not expected and was welcomed as a departure from usual story telling techniques. The pivot to controlling A2 in the world left behind after routes A & B was very clever as well as the conflict between A2 and 9S.
The tower and the secrets behind the war, humanity and YoRHa brought back the same feelings I got from the Matrix Trilogy and Battlestar Galactica (namely the machine intelligence being the architect of the war, as well as the inevitable cycle of conflict - and the machine developing true sentience, emotions etc.). All the way until ending C was amazing and I was full of anticipation, that was quickly deflated, for ending D.
Ending D requires simply loading the chapter (from the newly acquired chapter select) at the end of Route C and picking whichever character you didn't pick at the end of that route, to see the Route D end. I was deflated, but not deterred from flying headlong into Route E. I thought that the plot line with the Pods was great, that they had developed from simple assistants and evolved into conscious, autonomous units concerned about A2, 2B and 9S enough to defy their programming and bring them back. I really enjoyed the bullet hell where you literally fight against the final credits, symbolising the defiance of the story endings C&D.
Cut to cinematic, they're reconstructing the androids and I'm all geared up to chase down the answers to the question of: what next? Are we going to see the recreation of the next cycle of YoRHa and the new droids? Will 2B and 9S act in a similar fashion to their earlier interactions with A2 and be branded deserters?
Nope. That's IT.
I don't know whether to be amazed at the story which was great, if a little derivative, and the boldness of the story telling or, to be insulted at how the game's "final ending" is purely there to set up a sequel.
I'd love to hear the opinions of others and what you took away from the ending, the questions you have and would like answered. Maybe the games greatest achievement is it's power to linger in the mind and leave so much unanswered - it's arguably Bloodborne's greatest lore and story achievement after all. I just expected and, in all honesty, needed more resolution.
My rating 7.5/10. Would recommend when on sale, I'd be especially aggrieved had I paid full price for it.
