The official forums where others will also crash and die and also ask questions like "What does the self destruct button do?" and "I shot at a ship 40 times larger then mine, they killed me, what gives?"
I remember watching Angry Joe's review of No Man's Sky and the thing that stuck out the most to me was that everything that he complained about as not being in the game or not being able to do, was something you could do in elite dangerous.
That doesn't mean that Elite has the most fleshed out gameplay mechanics of all those things he wanted in NMS. But they did exist in the game (Politics, reputation, bounty hunting, etc) and if they were not the most fleshed out now, they could be later.
So for the people who are interested in the game because they liked the idea of NMS but are worried the game suffers from the same issues. Let me be clear, Elite is not perfect. But unlike Destiny where people kept playing because they were addicted to the grind despite the "shallowness". In Elite, people keep playing because there is nothing else like it in the entire gaming market, what it does well, it does absolutely amazing. What it doesn't do well are things that are actively being worked upon or will change in the future or you can legit raise a pitchfork about.
And if you just want to explore and not worry about the other things the game has you covered.
Also, lastly, lastly. There are people who say the game is "hard" but Elite is actually quite simple. Unlike most games where the game gets harder the more you play (Like say in an MMO an boss fight at level 10 is much different from one at max level during a raid), Elite gets much easier the more you play. The game is only "hard" because it throws you, literally into EVERYTHING at once. From the very first seconds of the game you could theoretical buy a fuel scoop and start making your way to the other side of the galaxy. You can immediately bounty hunt, join other players, visit the aliens and get probed facially, etc.
But the reality is you'll be doing this: (and if you neither watch nor read read anything else I say, at least watch this video)

Elite is hard because 99% of everything in the game is open to you from the very starting seconds. What's "hard" is learning how to learn it all. Once you grasp it though, it's very interesting to see how simple many things in the game are.
What you are feeling is a sense of being overwhelmed. Ask for help. Make friends in game and learn together. Come to the subreddits. Focus on one task at a time.

As for other things to do mining, racing, combat, bounty hunting, conflict zones, pirating, exploration, powerplay, scavenging, upgrading your ship, missions, engineers, alien mysteries, finding lost colony ships (no really, those lost ships are really cool), etc the list goes on.

Join the Church of The Space Cats. actually you can't...I mean...you'd have to play with them to understand just how...you know what. Make your own groups. You can do that. They even give you your own system where you can increase your influence and take it over and expand. Space Cats are on Xbox and while they are my friends (mostly) given the chance I'd certainly watch in glee if they died a horrible death because they have the rebuy cost. Certainly in Elite we've had plenty of wars between groups for various reasons. It's fun and the salt mines never end especially when someone combat logs and denies doing it.

You know all that serious stuff that I said you can do in the game? Forget all of that, in this game you can do SPACE TOURISM.

Elite Makes you realize that things in the game are pretty darn big. I mean literally, the Eagle one of the smallest ships in the game is half the size of a football field almost. Another example? In this photo I am 500ls away from those two stars that are super close binary red giants and the third star? That one is 2000ls away and it's still that massive.

Congrats! You just joined the galaxy where the three superpowers have rising tensions, two of them are locked in a cold war, alien ships are ripping people out of hyperspace, the thargoids have returned (after we committed genocide on them in the last conflict), where a shadowy conspiracy that came about because they feared the cradle of civilization would fall to an unstoppable threat, real life people are still assholes, you don't know how to fly or even dock, and you have yet to learn what "momentum" really means when in zero gravity.

But for real. if you can't afford the rebuy. Don't fly the ship.
