Plug in headphones into the PS4 ?

Hi, I've been told that it isn't possible to plug in headphones into a PS4 without using the DS4 controller.

Could i use this method for plugging my headphones (3.5mm) directly into the PS4 ?

"Plug one end of the TOSLINK cable into your PS4 and the other end into the converter. Next, plug the RCA adapter’s red/white ends into the outputs on the converter. Finally, plug the speaker's output jack into the input jack on the RCA adapter."
