Question about ssd for the ps4 ?

Hi ! my ps4 is running out of memory so I was going to get a ssd for it so I was googling around but the only thing i can see is about the ssd replacing the hard drive ? Isn't there a way to just plug it in to the ps4 ? I've never used a ssd before so not sure
