Can I use a USB to SATA cable when upgrading my PS4 hard drive

I want to upgrade my PS4 hard drive to a 1TB but I don't want to buy a new internal hard drive and a new external hard drive to back up my PS4 data.

Can I just install my new internal hard drive in to my PS4 and use my old one as the backup, using the USB to SATA cable to connect it.

I don't know if that works :)
