Question about external hard drives.

So I'm finally investing in an external hard drive for my PS4 Pro and was curious if there was anything I should know (as I've never bought an external before at all). The biggest question was if it matters whether it's an expansion or a back up. Any and all info is appreciated guys, thanks!!
