What's the deal with Ark: Survival Evolved?

I've seen Ark in the PlayStation store in the popular and featured areas for the past few months. It seems to show up in the top selling games of the month most of the time as well. For being that visible and seemingly popular, I rarely ever seen it talked about here. I also listen to a decent number of gaming podcasts and haven't really heard it mentioned there either.

So why is that? Is the game not that great? It seems to have a decent rating in the store and looks as though it sells well, so I can't imagine that is the case. Is it in the Skylanders vein where it's pretty popular to the general public but not really discussed or played as much by the more hardcore community? Anyone have any experience with it or insight?
