Copy save games off old PS4 hard drive in a non working unit.

My son and I tried to replace the failing fan in his OG PS4 and we (I) broke the power supply connector off the motherboard. After several failed attempts to re-solder it to the MB it broke. So tonight I'm going to buy him a new Pro and from everything I've read it's impossible to get anything off the old hard drive to transfer to the new hard drive when it's no longer in a working system. Since the fan seemed like an easy project we did not back the HD up before starting. Is it possible to put the old hard drive into an external USB enclosure and hook it up to the new PS4 once we have the new one set up? We're mainly concerned about any save game files that may not be backed up to the PSN cloud. I don't want to spend more money on an enclosure if it won't work. TIA
