Extended HDD question

I just got a 4tb external hard drive so I can have some extra space on my PS4. I'm about to format it so it can be compatible, But I'm not sure if after I format it for my PS4, will that effect its compatibility with my laptop or any other devices? I'm really not sure so any help is appreciated!
