I downloaded this the day it was released, then read a ton of spectacular press and user reviews for the game. I saw all the five-slapping and adoration for N:A on this sub and still never even touched the demo. Then, while bored, I actually picked it up and gave it a look-see.
Holy shit, this game seems awesome! At first it's a fluid, third-person action festival--exactly what you'd expect from Platinum. Then, suddenly I'm playing Diablo when the camera goes all isometric and/or top-down on me. Fast forward to a 2D side scrolling section--which seamlessly connects to the 3D environments I had begun in. The best part is that all of these bizarre transitions utilize the combat mechanics of the former, meaning every time the game literally switches genres on you, you don't have to relearn the controls.
But wait . . . there's more! During the demo's boss fight I found myself wearing an aerial mech suit, playing a bullet hell shooter before closing in to rip off the enemy's arm and cave his skull in with it.
I have no fucking clue what just happened, or how that all made such perfectly good sense--but it did! I don't even know what this game is, or how I would describe it to anyone who hasn't played it. I imagine the conversation would go a little something like this:
"So, what genre is Nier: Automata?"
"Yes!"
All of that said, I'm heading to Gamestop right now, to pick it up. Because this shit just feels like something that I need to play. Why did I wait so long in the first place!?
