New to PS4, can you setup a profile and a username before buying PS+ membership?

Long title but it explains it all, i'm looking at getting a unique username for my nickname in person, and I was wondering if I could have my friend make the account for me on his PS4, give me the info when I get my PS4, sign in and pay for online?
