Are you supposed to disconnect an external drive each time you turn the PS4 off?

I just got an external drive, I turned off the PS4 the first time and when I turned it back on there was a message telling me to disconnect the drive in the menus. After that if I turn off the PS4 the message doesn't show. Do I really need to do that every time I turn off the PS4?
