External hard drive information please sirs and ma’ams.

So I had been told using an external hard drive I would have to transfer my games back to the main hard drive to play them. Is this not true anymore? It seems that the games I have transferred I can still boot up and play fine... any information would be appreciated. If this is legit then this is awesome I just added 3TB to my system. Thanks in advance!
