Moving External HDD to internal.

I have been using a 4tb external HDD with my ps4 since the feature became available, and it just now dawned on me that I could free up the USB slot by moving it internal as it dwarfs the stock 500 gb drive.

Can the external drive be placed internally without requiring a format?
