I know I'm late to the party, but I just played through Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls for the first time this week. I never had a PS3, and picked up a PS4 not too long ago, so I finally got to have these experiences!
BTS wasn't perfect by any means, but HR's story was still a complete mess in comparison. Since these are story-driven games, this is probably the most important part. In HR, the blackouts were dropped halfway through, Scott Shelby's inner thoughts lied to us, Norman has some crazy futuristic technology that's never explained, Madison knows Norman and Shelby even though they've never met, Ethan apparently talks about drowned children when he was supposed to be in a coma, etc. BTS had its own missteps too, but nothing was as blatantly bad as HR's.
Additionally, the BTS story was at least something different, while HR's story was a classic cliche-filled noir.
The voice acting in BTS was leaps and bounds better than the French actors doing American accents in HR. And the dialogue, while not perfect, was also a lot better.
The gameplay directions in BTS were much more subtle, and didn't clutter up the picture. Plus, sometimes I couldn't even see the dialogue options in HR when they were shaking and right on top of each other.
The camera in BTS, while not perfect, but was way more maneuverable than that of HR's.
In BTS, you didn't have to hold down L2 (or whatever it was) the ENTIRE GAME to move around.
I'm not here to shit on HR. I like the game, and I think it was hugely important to the genre of interactive drama, but I don't understand how anyone can see BTS as anything but an improvement on HR in every way possible (which also gets me even more excited for Detroit). Yet, almost everywhere I look, HR is universally praised and BTS gets shit on. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
If anyone completely disagrees with me, please, tell me why!
EDIT: The one argument I do anticipate is player control over the endings being better in HR. I can see that argument, but I just don't know if being able to have a few more ending options outweighs everything else.
EDIT 2: Rather than downvoting right away, please share your opinions. I'd really like to know your thoughts on this, not just see another downvote because you disagree.
