External hard drive - once formatted for the ps4, can you still store other non-ps4 data on it?

Just so happens I need an external hard drive for reasons unrelated to my ps4, as well as for game storage on my ps4. After formatting the external HD for ps4 use, could I then still use it for say pictures from my computer in addition? Or will it than no longer work for the ps4?
