[Question] If i disable power to USB in rest mode is it bad for the external HD?

As title. Had to get some USB AC infinity fans cause my PRO is getting loud and hot. So is it bad for my external HD? What happens when I put it into rest mode? I have accidentally pulled the USB for the external out and was met by a message I didn't power it off correctly etc. Would I receive that every time I powered on?
