Just for clarification I haven't really played any Ninja Theory game other than a little bit of the rebooted Devil May Cry.
When Hellblade was announced some time ago as a AAA indie game, I along with many others took one glance at it and thought "yeah sure". We as gamers have been burnt before by promises of indie sized studios bringing forth games that promise AAA production value (No Man's Sky, Godus, Mighty No. 9, etc.) and I think I wasn't the only one that didn't give the game a fair shake. For the many years the game was in development it really hadn't been on many people's list of most anticipated games of 2017 and even some of the most in the know video game enthusiasts had forgotten about the game entirely until a week before it released. I remember thinking to myself that this game was going to be DOA based on the lack of attention it was receiving up until its release.
Then the reviews for Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice came in, with most of them heralding the game for its excellent graphics, story, atmosphere, and mechanics. The game as well is also a very important game for its emphasis on Senua's mental illness and how Ninja Theory went to great lengths consulting mental health professionals to avoid the stereotyping and inaccuracy of mental illness that happens in not just video games but in all media.
I've went from absolute zero interest in this game to being incredibly intrigued and with a decent price of only $30 dollars it definitely is up on the list of games I will play once I finish Persona 5. I am so excited for this game and what worries me now is how much of a success this game will ultimately be. I want this game to sell well enough that Ninja Theory doesn't regret making a game without a publisher and goes on to create even more games with the same amount of passion visibly given to Hellblade. I also want this game to be a success so more developers are unafraid to take risks in development such as spending considerable time researching the subjects and themes their games tackle.
Does anyone else who has played the game firsthand agree with the reviews this game has gotten so far? And am I alone in hoping the best for Ninja Theory?
